'Dawgs 0-2?
Saturday saw three USBL games on the board. The ValleyDawgs were the only of the six teams playing their second game. Was it fatigue, or was it just lack of effort?
Corey Hightower scored 40 points on 12-24 shooting and 14-16 from the free throw line. Along with Corey, Erron Maxey scored 22 points. It just wasn't enough though. At the end of the first half, the score was 74-54 and Pennsylvania had dug itself into a huge whole. The defense just wasn't there. Now many people saw there isn't any defense in the USBL anyway.
On the other side, former 'Dawg Ronnie Fields scored 7 points against the team he signed with earlier this year. Ronnie went 3-4 from the field. DeeAndre Hullett led the team in scoring with 23. Pretty much everybody on the Sea Dragons roster Saturday night got signifigant points. It was a team effort.
So what now? The ValleyDawgs fall to 0-2 to start the 2002 season. Friday night saw a loss by a margin of 15 points to an expansion Blue Ducks team. Saturday night saw Pennsylvania get manhandled against a much improved Florida Sea Dragons team, turning the ball over 34 times; Final score: 131-104.
"There will be guys that played that won't be here on Monday." Pennsylvania head coach Darryl Dawkins. "I have some positions to fill. I don't want to go over exactly what right now."
The turnovers were much a problem. Now, Corey Hightower and company have a week to fix the problem. The 'Dawgs are off until April 27th when they travel to Brooklyn. Hopefully, they can fix whatever is wrong by then.
St. Louis Can't Find A Win
Johnny Jackson scored 24 points and 12 rebounds and rookie Devin Brown scored 18 points in a season opening road victory Saturday night for the Kansas Cagerz. The Cagerz traveled to St. Louis where the Skyhawks opened up their inaugural season in the USBL.
St. Louis really never had a chance in this game as they were behind by as many as 26 points until a late rally. Chad Prewitt led the Skyhawks with 19 points. The finaly score said 111-100, but that score doesn't tell how dominating Kansas played.
Legends Play Overtime
Playing a game of catch up pretty much all night, Dodge City finishes off the come back in overtime as they beat St. Josephs 112-107. Over 1,400 fans came out to see if Dodge City could try to make it back in the USBL Championship. They started off the season right. Tim Pledger scored 29 points in the second half. Pretty amazing considering he had 1 point in the first half.
Back to back three pointers for each team caused the game to go to overtime. Greg Jones scored 23 points for the Express.
